House of the Sun

Photo Friday Theme- Heights
This shot was taken at the top of Haleakalā on the island of Maui. My husband was walking up to the observation tower.

The tallest peak of Haleakalā (“house of the sun”), at 10,023 feet, is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive crater 7 miles across, 2 miles wide and nearly 2,600 ft deep.

It was an extremely cloudy day and you felt like you could have been exploring Mars, but once the clouds lifted, the views were magnificent!
